Septic System Information

A properly maintained septic systems typically last between 15-40 years. The best way to get the longest possible life out of a septic system is to follow the following recommendations:

  • Keep System Clean – Clean and pump the septic tank every 2-4 years depending on use and the size of the septic tank.
  • Minimize Water Use – The less water going through the septic system the better. Direct any water from surfaces and rain gutters away from the septic system and leach lines.
  • Use With Care – Do not flush items such as cleaning wipes, baby wipes, sanitary napkins, or other items that may clog the system. Minimize chemicals such as antibacterial soaps and detergents which could kill the bacteria inside the septic tank that helps breakdown everything.
  • Keep Area Clear – Grass is the best cover for your septic tank and leach fields. Do not plant large trees over the septic tank and leach lines. Do not drive large vehicles over the leach lines or place large structures such as swimming pools and sheds over the system.
